Rwandan FlagCapacity Building: Improving Drug Distribution in Rwanda

Prescription for Hope pharmacies have sought to augment the drug distribution infrastructure in Rwanda and have filled over 19,000 prescriptions

Rwanda is among the world’s least developed countries, ranking 158 of 177 in the United Nations

Less than 20% of HIV infected Rwandans receive antiretroviral treatment. Only 9.4% of infected women receive ARV treatment to reduce mother-child transmission.*

Our goal is to understand a developing country’s pharmacy dispensing and drug distribution system then build dispensing pharmacies to get treatment to the people who need it, not only for HIV but for other epidemics such as malaria.

Prescription For Hope (PFH) will provide the following pharmacy services for developing countries:

  • Evaluate existing resources such as land, the power grid, software and hardware infrastructure, security, building materials, pharmacy supplies, available pharmacy personnel.
  • Devise culturally acceptable ways to teach patients how take their medications and stay adherent to drug regimens.

By understanding how pharmacy care is delivered, Prescription For Hope can enhance care by incorporating pharmacy designs, strategies, and techniques from the United States.
