Our Mission
Since 2005, Prescription for Hope, a New York based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, has dedicated time and resources to help make a difference in the lives of Rwandans living with HIV.
In 1994, the world was captivated by the horrors of a genocide that claimed the lives of over 1 million innocent Rwandans. Ten years, later another horror affects the lives of Rwandans: AIDS.
Through Prescription for Hope, a chance for change exists. While there is no cure for HIV/AIDS, Prescription for Hope gives people living with HIV the possibility to live healthier and longer lives. Prescription for Hope links medication to patients by creating modern pharmacies staffed by professional, Rwandan pharmacists.

Capacity Building
Where would you turn to for medication if your neighborhood drug store did not exist? Who would fill the prescription written by your trusted doctor? These are questions faced daily in countries around the globe.
Prescription for Hope improves the delivery of medication and increases the likelihood for success by merging pharmacy design and best practices from the United States while respecting and incorporating the Rwandan culture. We accomplish this by:
- Constructing ecologically sensitive facilities.
- Installing cutting edge technology and pharmacy management software.
- Coordinating with local healthcare providers.
- Offering culturally sensitive, medication adherence counseling which incorporates techniques to reduce the spread of HIV.
Unlike many foreign aid providers, Prescription for Hope values the role of local government in the decision making process. Prior to constructing a pharmacy or training personnel, Prescription for Hope brings stakeholders into the project development process. Every day and in every way, Prescription for Hope is committed to the expansion (not the duplication) of services.
